American, JetBlue, and Alaska have all recently increased their baggage fees. The price to check a bag now depends on whether travelers pay in advance or at the airport. Airlines are looking for ways to increase profits while managing costs. United Airlines is the latest carrier to raise baggage fees, which brought in over $5 billion for airlines in the first nine months of 2023. United economy passengers will now pay $40 for the first checked bag and $50 for the second checked bag. American Airlines, JetBlue, and Alaska Airlines have also raised their baggage fees this year.
